In Japanese folklore, KIYOHIME  fell in love with a Buddhist monk named Anchin, but after her interest in the monk was rejected, she chased after him and in anger turned into a snake before killing him in a bell, under which he had hidden in the Dōjō-ji temple.

The Hannya mask mostly is about unfavourable qualities that need to be overcome: an evolvement of one's own self.
