Oniwakamaru is the childhood name of Benkei, a famous warrior monk from Japanese folklore and history. He is best known for his immense strength, loyalty and his later service to the tragic hero Minamoto Yoshitsune. According to the legend, a monstrous carp had eaten Oniwakamarus mother. The young warrior dove into the water, wrestled and defeated the beast, avenging her death and proving his supernatural courage.
